Qld: Queensland no longer the lowest taxing state

Queensland's lost its long-cherished claim to be Australia's lowest taxed state or territory.

Treasurer ANNA BLIGH told state parliament Queensland has the lowest tax collection
per person of any mainland state .. which puts it behind Tasmania.

Opposition leader LAWRENCE SPRINGBORG pounced on the admission .. saying Queensland's
always hung its hat on the fact it's the lowest taxed state or territory in the country.

Mr SPRINGBORG says tax increases have come from payroll .. land tax .. stamp duties
.. royalties and gambling bonanzas.

But Ms BLIGH'S defended the government's position .. saying Queensland's abolished
four taxes in the past 18 months.
