Fed: UN to report on mandatory jail ALP

United Nations Secretary-General KOFI ANNAN will request that UN High Commissioner
for Human Rights MARY ROBINSON provide Australia with advice on whether mandatory sentencing
breached Australia's international obligations.

Mr ANNAN has made the promise to Opposition Leader KIM BEAZLEY and Labor foreign spokesman
LAURIE BRERETON during a meeting today.

But he avoided the controversial issue during a joint press conference following his
first meeting with Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD.
