Vic: Driver airlifted to hospital after bus crash=2

Fifteen of those treated at the scene were children aged between eight and 18 on theirway to school, he said.

"Most of the kids suffered cuts and bumps and bruises," Mr Howe said.

"However, the passenger in the van suffered quite significant injuries including multiplefractures.

"He was trapped for approximately two hours before being flown by the air ambulancehelicopter to the Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition."

The driver of the van suffered only minor injuries, he said.

Mr Howe said it was fortunate the accident occurred across the road from the TransportAccident Commission (TAC's) Victorian Rehabilitation Centre, with nursing staff offeringinitial medical assistance to those on the bus.

"Traffic was gridlocked on Springvale Road - people couldn't get out of the way andambulances had difficulty in getting through," he said.

"Thankfully, there was a TAC centre nearby, and they were able to initially providesome first aid at the scene.

"We then used their front carpark as a triage area."

The children were later taken to either the Monash Medical Centre or Dandenong Hospitalfor further treatment and observation.

Springvale Road remained closed to northbound traffic for more than two-and-a-half hours.
